What You Do With Your Dreams

Not what they mean. The Eye watches who you tell, what you keep, and what you looked up at 4am.

What the Eye might call you

📓 The Ledger

There's a notebook. There's a system. There may be tags.

You write them down. Possibly in an app, possibly with dates, possibly with a tagging scheme you refined at some point and now would defend. You are not doing this to be mystical about it — you are doing it because unrecorded things do not exist to you, and you have applied that rule to your nights the same way you applied it to your money, your reading, and the small tracked habits nobody asked about. It works. You know things about your own patterns that most people simply never learn. The Eye notices the recording sometimes stands in for the feeling: an entry made is an entry closed, and there are several logged in there that you have filed rather than felt.

🔍 The Search Bar

4:12am, phone at fifteen percent, typing the word into the box.

You woke up with one image still attached to you and within ninety seconds you were looking it up, in the dark, squinting, on a site with eleven adverts on it. You do not believe the site. You are not stupid and you would say so out loud. But you needed an answer shaped object to hold, because the alternative was lying there with an unresolved feeling and no container for it, and you have never been able to do that. The Eye notices the searching is the same reflex you use in daylight: something lands wrong, and rather than sit inside the not-knowing for an hour, you go and get seventeen tabs of maybe. The tabs never end it. They just move it.

🪶 The Sign Taker

You didn't send the message because of something you saw at 5am.

You will not admit this at a dinner table, but a dream has changed a real decision of yours — you did not call, you did call, you finally said the thing — and the dream got the credit. Here is what the Eye actually notices, and it is not about the dream: the decision was already made. You had been carrying it for weeks and it needed a form of permission that did not require you to say out loud I want this. The night handed you one. Then you acted, and afterwards you described the sequence in the order that let it not be a choice. The instinct was yours. It has always been yours. You just prefer it arriving from somewhere else.

🌫️ The Clean Waker

You say you don't dream. Everybody dreams.

You wake up and the night is simply gone — no residue, no images, nothing to report, and you say this with a mild pride that is worth looking at. Everyone dreams; the difference is what happens in the ninety seconds after waking, and yours are extremely efficient. Phone, list, shower, gone. You are not repressing anything dramatic. You have just built a morning with no gap in it, because the gap is where the unsorted material would surface, and you have never found unsorted material useful. The Eye notices that this same efficiency runs all day: you are the person who is completely fine, immediately, after things that visibly cost other people a week.

🌑 The Night Keeper

The good ones evaporate. The bad ones you can still describe from years ago.

Ask about a pleasant dream and you have got nothing. Ask about the worst one and you can give the layout of the room, the exact quality of the light, and what you were holding. Your retention is wildly asymmetrical, and it is not only at night: you can recite the sentence someone said to you in a corridor in 2019 and cannot easily recall a compliment from last Tuesday. This is not weakness. Threat-shaped material is simply stored differently in you, and it has made you prepared for things other people walk into blind. The Eye notices the cost is that your internal archive is not a fair sample of your life — it is a case file, built entirely from the prosecution's evidence.

📨 The One Recipient

One person hears them. It has been the same person for years.

There is exactly one number that gets the 7am message, and there has been for a long time, possibly through two different versions of your life. Everyone else gets a normal edited person; that one gets the unedited feed, including the parts that make no sense. This is real intimacy and it is genuinely rare — most people never build one. But the Eye notices what it also does: routing your whole interior through a single point means the rest of your relationships never develop past pleasant, and it means one person is quietly carrying an amount that nobody has ever named out loud to them. You have not asked whether they want it. You have assumed, for years, based on the fact that they have not stopped.

🗣️ The Morning Teller

You're narrating it before you've fully woken up.

Whoever is nearest at 8am is getting the whole thing, in order, with the confusing part explained twice. You know objectively that other people's dreams are the least interesting category of human speech, and you tell them anyway, because the telling is not really about the dream. You are checking that the channel is open. A night happened inside your head with nobody in it, and the fastest way back to the shared world is to hand somebody a piece of it and watch them receive it. The Eye notices you do this most on the mornings after something real happened, and that the dream is often the safest available way to say I felt strange last night without having to say I felt strange last night.
